Belize City, Belize, September 28, 2024 – The inaugural World Sustainable Travel and Hospitality Awards was successfully held at Oakridge Venues in Spanish Lookout on World Tourism Day, September 27, 2024. Leaders in sustainable travel, award nominees, government officials, and representatives from local organizations attended the prestigious event.
Launched in 2023 at COP 28 in Dubai on World Tourism Day, the World Sustainable Travel and Hospitality Awards recognize, celebrate, and share the stories of individuals and organizations worldwide who are driving change and making significant contributions to sustainable travel and tourism. This year, individuals and organizations were recognized across twenty-one categories. Award entries were vetted by the Nova School of Business and Economics in Lisbon followed by a public voting process to determine the winners for each category.
We proudly announce that Belize has emerged as the Leading Sustainable Destination. Specifically, Belize’s Blue Bond, an innovative model that combines debt reduction with long-term funding for marine conservation, was highlighted. This initiative is critical for building climate resilience and achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From a tourism perspective, the Blue Bond not only emphasizes Belize’s pioneering and leadership role in environmental conservation but also strengthens the commitment of both the public and private sectors to sustainable tourism development in the long term.
Additionally, three categories were dedicated to recognizing local efforts in sustainable tourism. These categories and winners were:
- Leading Sustainable Cultural Heritage Project – Che’il Mayan Chocolate
- Leading Sustainable Marine Conservation Initiative – Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association
- Leading Sustainable Community Engagement Programme – Belize Tourism Industry Association
Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Hon. Anthony Mahler, shared, “We are incredibly proud of Belize’s achievements at the World Sustainable Travel and Hospitality Awards. These wins reflect our nation’s deep commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism. Belize is setting a global example of how tourism and conservation can work hand in hand for the benefit of our people and the planet.”
Minister of Sustainable Development and Climate Change, Hon. Orlando Habet, emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure environmental sustainability remains a top priority for Belize. His presence reflected the ministry’s focus on balancing development with conserving Belize’s natural resources.
Minister of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management, Hon. Abner ‘Andre’ Perez, celebrated the Blue Bond as a landmark achievement in Belize’s sustainability journey, especially within the marine conservation sector. He underscored the importance of such innovative financial mechanisms in protecting marine resources.
